Yeah, I've been obsessed with Crockett and the Alamo since I was three. That said, Bowie lived just as colorful a life as Crockett, being a smuggler working with pirates to winning the most famous knife fight of American history, which got a knife named after him, becoming Spanish gentry, and finally, fighting to the death while on his deathbed! I would say all the Alamo defenders should be hailed as heroes for defending themselves against certain death and not surrendering, because they believed in independence.

The Alamo defenders defied direct orders from senior command to abandon the site and from a tactical standpoint succeeded at nothing more than getting themselves slaughtered. The only good things that came out of their insubordination was that it gave the Texian's something to use as propaganda to raise troops along with something to yell other than "Remember Goliad!"

It also delayed Santa Anna's troops, giving the Texans valuable time to run and regroup, and ultimately gain their independence.
